Be a mentor to a young reader

When you combine your love for reading and your concern for literacy, what do you get? The makings of an AWESOME volunteer!

In2books, an e-based mentoring program designed for kids grades 2-5, has created a truly fulfilling and REALLY EASY way to volunteer and make a difference in a young reader’s life. The great thing is, you don’t have to leave your home! Your In2Books relationship is computer correspondence based. You volunteer from your home by corresponding with your pen pal on line about the books you’re reading simultaneously.

You commit to reading 5 books in a one year period and exchange 6 letters. Your back and forth exchange builds self-esteem as it promotes a love of reading, reading comprehension and thoughtful dialog. In your E-PAL relationship, you have the opportunity to ask thought provoking questions about the book you both read. You’ll learn from the child’s point of view as you explore the world of the written word together. While you’re only investing a short amount of time, your efforts have the potential to yield great results! Imagine it! You get to read great books AND get to know an awesome kid in the process! You can really make a difference!

Consider becoming an In2Books Pen Pal today!

Don’t Toss It! Re-Use It!

Organize bobbles with a chocolate candy liner

Organizing and decorating your apartment can get a little pricey if you start from scratch with brand new stuff! Why not save MONEY and GO GREEN at the same time by re-purposing things you already have on hand?

I come from a long line of re-purposers. My grandmother, who who lived through the Great Depression found uses for things most people would label as trash. My mother, who just loves saving money, is a GENIUS when it comes to re-purposing! Both women were GOING GREEN before it was even COOL!

My mother has organized her entire work room using old lunch boxes. She’s labeled each one accordingly; one for old rags, one for hardware, one for paint brushes and so forth. All the boxes stack nicely on the shelves and even have a handle for the easy grab-n-go. That was impressive but it wasn’t THAT idea in particular that inspired me.

The day she recruited me to help her organize her jewelry box was when her GREEN creativity was at its brightest. She’d taken the lining of a chocolate candy box and used it to organize the stray bobbles, beads and chains. Pure genius! What a great tool for organizing. The same principle is at work when using egg cartons to keep tiny things organized, like beads or buttons.

When it comes to decorating, the sky is the limit if you open up your mind to the re-use possibilities. Transform an OLD lamp shade into something funky and cool with a few strokes of a marker. Lock and load your hot glue gun and create a coffee can magazine rack. For GREEN apartment decorating inspiration, take a look at these inspirational ideas from REAL SIMPLE MAGAZINE!

Going GREEN is fun and easy! Before you toss it – GO GREEN and RE-USE it!

Make Lip Gloss Out of Chocolate

Chocolate - the perfect ingredient

Did I just die and go to Girlie DIY Heaven??!

I’m the quintessential Cheapie-McCheapskate, a die-hard Do-It-Your-Selfer AND a total girlie-girl. Nothing revs my engines like replacing expensive beauty products with my own homemade version. I get to save oodles of George Washingtons and pamper myself with lotions and powders while at the same time, gaining a sense of satisfaction in a job well done.

But now we go and add chocolate?!

Need I say … We’ve just taken DIYing to an entirely new level of COOL!? Great thing about this gem of a recipe is that it’s very easy to do. All you need are the following ingredients:

1 1/2 tsp grated cocoa butter
1/2 tsp coconut oil
1/8 tsp vitamin E oil
3 chocolate chips

Microwave the cocoa butter and oils until just melted. It’s important to watch closely so that you don’t over heat it. Once melted, immediately add the little chocolate chips of loveliness to the brew and then stir until thoroughly blended.  Pour this delightful mixture into a small container and let cool completely. VIOLA! Happiness for your lips and pocketbook!

Making your own Homemade Beauty Products is fun, easy and cost efficient. Most recipes are made using everyday ingredients you already have in your apartment. From homemade cleaners to laundry soap and shampoo, there’s almost nothing you can’t make at home!

Of course, not every recipe utilizes chocolate but …. I guess that’s just another of life’s sad injustices.
